Annual Report for 2007

The Data Protection Commissioner, Billy Hawkes, will launch his Annual Report for 2007 on Thursday 8th May 2008, at 12:00 a.m. in the Dun Library, Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, 6 Kildare Street, Dublin 2. 

Members of the media are cordially invited to attend the launch.  The Data Protection Commissioner will be available to address any queries including in relation to current and prospective issues on the data protection agenda.

Some key points in the Annual Report will include:

· Privacy and the public sector – a need for balance between the demands of security and efficiency in the public sector, on the one hand, and the individual's right to privacy on the other;
· The responsibilities of private sector organisations in regard to the personal data of their customers and clients;
· The increasing level of awareness of the rights given to individuals by the Data Protection Acts;
· A list of occasions when the Data Protection Commissioner was obliged to resort to the use of his legal powers to move an investigation forward;
· Measures undertaken to address the problems posed by unsolicited text messages;
· The need to respond positively to the challenges posed by new technologies;
· The outcome of specific complaints and investigations, involving (among others) –

o Inappropriate processing of sensitive personal data by a health company
o Suspension of a cold-call marketing operation
o Inappropriate use of CCTV by a gym and a well-known hotel
o Inappropriate disclosure of employee information by a large airline
o Inappropriate access to personal data held by a public body
o Unsolicited email marketing by a large retailer
