CASE STUDY 6/96

Inadequate security – position of computer screen in public area

The complainant wanted to buy a fridge in a shop. She enquired whether she could avail of an instalment payment scheme. The assistant checked some information about her on a computer screen. The complainant was upset, because her information was visible to other customers who were free to circulate around the computer.

I decided that the requirement of the Act to provide adequate security (section 2 (1) (d)) had been contravened. An investigation established that the screen was badly situated, and it was possible for customers to see details on screen although staff tried to be discreet. However, in a remodelling of the retail space the computer screen was placed in a more private and secure position and staff were reminded to be careful in accessing customer data.
