A need for enhanced co-operation between law enforcement authorities has given rise to the establishment of Eurojust. It is intended to facilitate the investigation and prosecution of crimes which have a cross-border dimension, aiding co-operation between judicial and prosecuting authorities.

Eurojust functions as a central body of lawyers, magistrates, judges and other legal experts seconded from Member States. Though national experts, they are expected to put any case brought to their attention into an EU context. Eurojust offers advice to Member States and also request information from member states.

Eurojust can make recommendations to Member States but does not have authority to initiate or conduct investigations itself. The Data Protection Commissioner is a member of Eurojust Joint Supervisory Body.
